Suzanne Brooks is a musician, a teacher, a mentor and an educator. And she calls herself a "woman singer with a band" because she finds that singers in the music industry are often underrated as musicians, especially in jazz, when the numbers of singers is examined. Suzanne is working to end stereotypes in the world of music and is aiming to replace those stereotypes with respect for working musicians and equity for women performers....continue

International Women of Color Day 3/4/07
The Jazz Generation performs @ 2007 Community Women of Color Day/Diversity Event The public is invited to the March 4, 2007, 4 to 8 pm Commemoration the 21st annual International Women of Color Daya celebration which has encouraged local communities to recognize outstanding local women of color and men, women and organizations of any group which is engaged in efforts promoting diversity and cross-cultural collaboration.

The 2007 theme, "The Impulse to Soar," from the words of Helen Keller, draws attention to women who have notable achievements despite disabilities and medical challenges. 2007 marks the beginning of an expanded national/international focus to increase awareness of those whose positive influences on the global community merit greater attention and who are role models for people everywhere. > Learn more www.womenofcolorday.com

"Great Women of Jazz," a narrated musical history of great women jazz vocalists, performed by Sacramento ensemble, The Jazz Generation. "Great Women of Jazz," which premiered in 2004 will be performed for the 3rd time by playwright/vocalists Suzanne Brooks and the other members of The Jazz GenerationChris Lee (keyboard), Gabe Stivala (guitar/bass), Kim Nguyen (bass/flute/keyboard), Big John Evans (drums), and Dawn Whitney (sax). Local actress/dancer Andrea "Ya-ya" Porras will narrate and dance. Elaine Gosine, choreographer, will dance. Monique Jefferson will contribute to the narration and vocals. Songs of the show include Billie Holiday's "Stormy Blues," Ella Fitzgerald's "Getting Sentimental Over You," Rosemary Clooney's "Shadow of Your Smile," Blossom Dearie's "My Attorney Bernie," Nancy Wilson's "Save Your Love For Me" and more in a program both entertaining and enlightening about the lives of the women whose work is represented.
