Cecilia Gray and Lee Anderson, retired professors from California State University, Sacramento, opened DiSH in the fall of 2007. Their goal was to create a shop that focused on what they call the Golden Age of American Design, 1930 through the 1950’s. It was the ‘Golden Age’ because American design in the early part of the 20th Century was still recovering from European Victorian styles, and in the last half of the century ‘Made in America’ switched to ‘Made in China’. There was a brief period, between 1930 and 1959, when American design flourished.
DiSH attempts to give a flavor of the beauty and quality of design during this period with its selection of American dinnerware, glssware, barware, kitchen accessories, toasters, waffle irons and coffee pots. There are examples on permanent display, as well as unique vintage gifts spread throughout the shop including port and champagne glasses, teapots, pitchers, figurines, California pottery, ice buckets, martini shakers, picture frames, linens, salt and pepper shakers, & silver bon-bon dishes. They emphasize that this is a ‘Gift Shop,’ not an antique store. What’s the difference? “Come see for yourself.”
To sweeten the shopping experience, DiSH also sells premiere chocolates from a small artisanal shop in San Fracisco called XOX Truffles. If you haven’t had them, you’re in for a treat – they’re addictively delicious.
If you’re looking for that special gift for a person or occasion, go to DiSH. Brides-to-Be can find a more personal selection of gifts than can be found at Macy’s or William Glen. Signing up for a Bridal Registry at DiSH is easy and fun. Gift wrapping and lay away are also available.
