Annual Winter Bird Festival in Galt

The purpose of this event is to advance public awareness and conservation of the regions wildlife.  Sandhill Cranes, Canadian Geese, Tundra Swans, pintails, and hundreds of other birds call Galt and its surrounding cities home.  The Winter Bird Festival will offer the community a chance to spend time discovering, learning, and educating themselves on the importance of these feathered creatures as well as the wetlands, agriculture, and open space of which are all crucial to their survival.

Winter Bird Festival Tour:  Cosumnes River Preserve
The Cosumnes River Preserve (CRP) is home to more than 250 species of birds, including greater Sandhill cranes, a species listed as threatened with extinction by the State of California.   In the winter, managed wetlands and rice fields support impressive numbers of greater and lesser Sandhill cranes, white-fronted and Canada geese, tundra swans, pintails and numerous other species of ducks.

Established in 1984, the CRP encompasses nearly 50,000 acres of wildlife-rich habitat in southeastern Sacramento County.   Lands within the Cosumnes River Preserve are jointly owned by The Nature Conservancy, Bureau of Land Management, Ducks Unlimited, California Department of Fish and Game, State Lands Commission, California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento County and various private owners. Working cooperatively, these partners are safeguarding and restoring the preserve’s freshwater wetlands and protecting the increasingly rare valley oaks that dot our landscape.   The CRP also demonstrates compatibility among agriculture, recreation and the natural environment.
