B Street Theatre has been known for its innovative productions of new plays since its first season in 1991.  A lesser-known fact is that the company was originally founded in 1986 for the purpose of bringing the excitement of theatre to children.  This mission was first fulfilled when Timothy Busfield created Fantasy Theatre, a touring group that now reaches 200,000 students in Northern California annually.

The organization produces five core programs as follows:

    • B Street Theatre: Fresh, contemporary, intimate new plays for general audiences. The B Street Theatre has been recognized as one of northern California’s top professional theatres, producing more than 90 new plays, 60 of which are world, American, West Coast, or regional premieres.
    • B Street Theatre Family Series: The region’s first fully professional theatre for young audiences. Launched in 2002, The Family Series features new and classic stories adapted for the stage. Weekday matinees are performed for school groups with weekend performances for the general public. (Formerly Children's Theatre of California)
    • B Street Theatre School Tour: The original program of Theatre for Children, this arts outreach program tours to schools  throughout Northern California reaching approximately 200,000 children annually. This program also inspires the next generation of playwrights through the annual Young Playwrights Festival with the winning entries being produced as a touring production. (Formerly Fantasy Theatre for Children)
    • B Street Conservatory: Providing classes in technique and scene study to actors discovering, or rediscovering, their unique talent. Instructors are B Street regulars who hold MFA’s from American Conservatory Theatre of San Francisco or other top training programs in the U.S. and have regional and national acting credits.
    • Intern Company: The B Street Theatre Acting Internship is an intensive 10-month program that immerses young actors in every aspect of professional theatre. These young people are recent college graduates seeking their first post-college, professional theatre experience. Interns qualify for membership in Actors Equity Association upon completion of the program.

    Sacramento's Best Little Theatre!

by PaulaInMidtown, Friday 28 of March, 2008 [17:37:20]

Great little theatre! Intimate seating and not a bad seat in the house, with the stage in the center, they do a good job of making sure everyone is part of the act. Also, it is never too hot or too cold, always a pet peeve of mine in other venues. Cute little wine bar up front and employees are always cheerful!

    Escanaba in Da Moonlight

by Jennifer DeSousa, Wednesday 19 of March, 2008 [22:40:46]

Bought back by popular demand, Escanaba in Da Moonlight was fun. Sac's real theatre crowd congegates at B Steet Theatre, and with good reason. Though I wasn't a huge fan of the ending, the performance was well given and received. And it was funny. The theatre is cozy and the crowd seemed casual and unpretentious. B Street is known for its quality performances and is perfectly tucked away on the edge of the rail line at 27th and B in Midtown. We heard the faint sounds of a train passing during the performance and thought it was a perfect accompaniment to the play.

    Great performance!

I saw the Big Bang at the B Street last summer and it was SO funny! Best show I've seen in a long time - this doesn't say much since I rarely go, but I have to say, this show made my evening. I laughed two hours straight! The theatre is really intimate. I love this place and will be back for their Christmas performance.
delicious! Furl this! digg this! stumbleupon this!
