April Second Saturday Debriefing

Check out our MySpace for photos from April 08 Second Saturday at Coventry.

The warm weather made this last Art Walk a great one to be in Midtown. I had to slip out of the shop to take a walk around town myself, and see all the interesting things that were happening all over the place. I have lived in a few different cities in this country, and I have never seen anything like Second Saturday, anywhere else.

I didn’t have long to wander, though. I had to return to Coventry for our own artist’s reception. As I came back, I passed by my neighbors at Zuda Yoga, setting up for a demonstration and featuring a few tables of artists outside. They always seem to have something interesting and worthwhile going on over there. I recommend that you visit them if you haven’t yet.

Back at Coventry, our band for the evening, Litany was just arriving and setting up. They were producing and tuning an exotic array of unusual instruments, including a harp, a dulcimer, and a row of lute-like guitars and a sitar. Once they got started, they didn’t stop! They jammed out the entire night with an eclectic mix of rhythms the sounded like they came from distant lands. I remember an audience of children, sitting mesmerized by the experience. At one point, even our featured artist, Steven Tiller sat in on dulcimer for a session.

Taking a cue from Tiller’s reused art materials, in the spirit of a Green Art Walk, we piled our worktable with tons of discarded art supplies and scraps of material that was bound to be thrown away. Normally reserved for serious archival framing, we invited everyone into our creative space to make art. Many children and almost as many adults spent a lot of time making pictures, playing with paint, and constructing even three dimensional art like airplanes and boats. We’re definitely considering doing that again with all the fun that it was.

I believe that we’re all born artists. Some of us just never grow up.
