What’s the haps? That’s right Midtowners!

Midtown is True Love with an Old Soul.

You heard it here first. Next Wednesday, Nov. 15, Sacramento reunites with its True Love, a coffeehouse, like no other, serving up fresh cups of Old Soul. Could there be a better match? Singer-songwriters return. Sacramento again has a chance to burst into its musical rights, to drive, to create, to connect burgeoning talent despite losing Tower Records as a patron. Sacramento can be a musical center of gravity. Kevin, Alison, and Rick bring us the return of True Love requited.

Inside a 2-story Victorian (2315 K St.) between 23rd and 24th on K St. , assuming that final inspection passed on the new outdoor patio built specifically for the needs of the coffeehouse and acoustic haven, Kevin Seconds completes his mission. The space is immaculate, colorful, filled with nooks and crannies. Sometimes bad things happen to good people in order for better things to happen. That’s what the Guru predicts. It’s the Seconds Coming right here in Midtown and the countdown has begun. Redemption against greedy landlords is ours. If you’d like to be added to the True Love e-mail list, send an e-mail to:truelovesacto@gmail.com and include ‘Subscribe’ on the Subject.

Months ago, the Guru argued before the City’s planning commission that if the City had no room for True Love Coffeehouse, but could allow another Starbuck’s, like the one proposed at 18th and L, then our Walkable City was smoke and mirrors.

The soul of a city can never be defined by ubiquity. Midtown is defined by its entrepreneurs, by small, locally owned businesses, by the character of its architecture, by risk, by eclectic offerings, by mixed use.

Speaking of which, early next Wednesday from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. also commemorates the public grand opening of 1801 L Apartments and the crane turning on the for-sale units across the street next door to Aioli Bodega Espanola. The ceremony will be sponsored by the Midtown Business Association (MBA) and the Building Industry Association (BIA). The developer of 1801 L, Sotiri Kolokotronis insists “the more, the merrier.” Connie Miottel, the interim Executive Director of the MBA, describes 1801 L as “a very successful public-private project, a definitive example of how urban infill and mixed use catalyze a neighborhood and economic development.” What say you Midtowners?

What else is happening?

On Thursday, November 16, come one, come all who wish to quit smoking. Celebrate National No Smoke Day and 10 lucky folks looking to kick the habit can experience ear acupuncture at the hands of Bradley Cimino. The Guru hails to Cimino Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine for rest and relaxation of the natural frequency. It is exceedingly difficult these days for the Guru to take a break, but Cimino’s acupuncture places the Guru into altered states to contemplate the depths of nirvana. In all seriousness, the Guru has rarely been as relaxed as during and after acupuncture with Cimino. Cimino’s practice is located inside the offices of Dr. Al’s A-Z Chiropractic next door to True Love Coffeehouse and across the street from Rick’s Dessert Diner, The Golden Bear, and Barby K.

Next Friday, November 17, singer-songwriter Mike Rofe returns to Sactown for a one-night show at the Fox and Goose beginning at 8:30 p.m. If you have not experienced Rofe’s soulful and sweet blend of humor and introspection on the ruminations of love, you should make your way inside the belly of the Goose, pull up a rare seat, pick your favorite ale, and open your ears. Rofe’s sophomore album Stand offers the arena version of Rofe’s usual solo or duos when producer and musical chameleon Dave Middleton runs freely on guitar. Stand ranges in influence from Dylan to Bare Naked Ladies and Elvis to Elvis Costello. The CD is rich and superb as are Rofe’s banter-filled sessions. Rofe may have returned to live in La La Land down south, but his heart remains in Sacramento and we’re sure to find him hanging at True Love Coffeehouse late night after his set.

That’s the haps Midtowners. See you at 2nd Saturday. Let the Guru know what’s going on in your 1 Degree.
